Acute Systemic Toxicity

Acute Systemic Toxicity

We conducted a comprehensive review of acute systemic toxicity testing requirements in jurisdictions participating in the International Cooperation on Alternative Test Methods (ICATM), including Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the USA. Our findings reveal that these tests are primarily required for hazard assessment, classification, and labelling, with some emphasis on animal reduction methods. While non-animal alternatives are not universally accepted, some jurisdictions support the use of test waivers to decrease animal usage in specific applications. Understanding the global landscape of regulatory requirements for acute systemic toxicity testing is essential for ICATM's strategy in developing, accepting, and implementing non-animal alternatives in alignment with evolving international regulatory standards. The covered chemical sectors include cosmetics, consumer products, industrial chemicals, medical devices, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals.
